American Cements by Uriah Cummings.
"A treatise on the nature and properties of natural and artificial hydraulic cements, together with an exhaustive research into the analytical and scientific branches of the subject. The historical and statistical branches of the work are replete with data covering the art from its earliest inception in history down to the present time, and contain valuable information on the subject which can be found in no other publication." Rogers & Manson, 1898
This publication is an unabridged version of the edition published in 1898 by Rogers & Manson of Boston. It is a hardcover volume featuring offset printing, a sewn binding and a cloth cover. The original text has been enhanced, substantially improving the legibility of this edition. New portions include a Forward, Preface and Index of the entire volume.
The Forward was written by Dawn Chapman, Editor of the 2006 Edition, and describes the improvements and additions to this important publication, as well as its relevance to a current audience.
The Introduction was written by John Lambert, an authority on the evolution of early American unit masonry mortars, and provides a thoughtful commentary on American natural cement, its place within the context of 19th century masonry methods and materials, and its potential role in historic preservation efforts in the United States over the coming years.
The book concludes with a 20 page Index of the entire volume. This is an important addition to this edition because it allows readers to quickly access information on specific architects, engineers, manufacturers, sites, structures, machinery and materials discussed in the text.
You may view five Sample Pages, including the original Preface and Table of Contents.
